Hike-A-Thon

In observance of National Trails Day, the Lynchburg Parks & Recreation Department has scheduled a Hike-A-Thon!  The goal is to walk 100 total miles! Each person who completes the walk will log in three (3) miles. Bring your dog to DOUBLE your miles!

Engaging the Mind: Business Person or Person in Business

In partnership with the Lynchburg Office of Economic Development, the program will feature Professor Gregory Fairchild as he leads an engaging discussion, Business Person or Person in Business: Investing in Your Professional Portfolio. The conversation will explore building a professional portfolio and will include consideration of how young professionals can invest in their own career development and growth through local opportunities. Participants will join in discussion of the opportunities in the area for their professional growth and growth of the community as well.

Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra Bike Tour

Tour begins at Riverside Park and takes the scenic route along River Road into Amherst County.  The easy, 20-mile round trip ends at Riverside Park where Chef Steve Royer of Dickey's Barbecue Pit, will ahve a scrumptious picnic of hickory-smoked barbecue, marinated chicken breasts, cole slaw, beans, and more ready for you when you return.

Science Saturday Starts June 9 at Community Market

Share your passion for science and nature!

Science Saturday starts June 9 at the Community Market. We are looking for local scientists and naturalists who want to share their passion with the Lynchburg community.  Science Saturday is targeted to adults with a WOW factor that brings out the child within all of us.

Each week, a different scientist presents an interactive activity lasting about 3 to 5 minutes to the shoppers at the Community Market in downtown Lynchburg.  There will be electricity, Internet access, a projector, computer with a variety of software and speakers for any type presentation you may want to make.

We need high energy presenters who enjoy engaging the public with the Wow of Science. Please contact Bea Stryker for more information.

Discover Lynchburg Summer Camp 2012

The Lynchburg Museum, 901 Court Street,  presents the Discover Lynchburg Summer Camp 2012
 
Available for children 9-12 years of age from June 11-14. Each camp will run Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Campers will tour historic sites, police, fire and water departments, and picnic at Percival's Island. They will take part in programs on nature, river navigation, make gargoyles, play 19th century games, and learn about plantation life. Activities at the Lynchburg Museum and Point of Honor are also included. The camp has just a few openings remaining -- Registration deadline is June 4.

Camp fees are $50 each for the week.

Homeowners, what are  you doing to protect water quality?  Do you minimize watering and fertilizing? Do you have a rain garden or rain barrels?  Have you thought about installing them but don't know where to start?  If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, you may be well on your way to becoming a River Hero Home!

You're invited to join the staff of the James River Association for an informational session about their new River Hero Home certification program.  They will be reviewing the program requirements and how to apply, and will answer your questions!

Many Voices One Community, the Dialogue on Race and Racism is collecting stories from Lynchburg citizens who have experienced some form of racial profiling in Lynchburg. There will be a brief presentation on racial profiling, a time for sharing stoires, and a survey to gather information on racial profiling to be used for future discussions or workshops.
