The Healthy Individuals through Prevention & Education (HiPE) Coalition will conduct two community forums to discuss youth/young adult drinking and alcohol related car crashes. HiPE was awarded a grant through Virginia Commonwealth University to reduce youth/young adult alcohol related car accidents by ten percent.
Refreshments will be served.

Jones Memorial Library Lecture Series - "From Prisoners to Provosts, the Union Presence in Lynchburg, 1862-1870"
Clifton Potter, “From Prisoners to Provosts, the Union Presence in Lynchburg, 1862-1870.” The talk starts in 1862 with establishment of an auxiliary facility in the Hill City, the site of the now campus of E.C. Glass, as a transit camp for Union prisoners that quickly passed the 500-person limit. The threat in 1864 to Lynchburg of Union forces under Gen. David Hunter, squelched by Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early, will also be highlighted, along with occupation of Union troops between 1865 and 1870, a mostly amicable arrangement. Rebuilding the Lynchburg economy just after the war will also be examined.

"Med Mobs" Around the World - an International Peace Day Event
Silent Meditation for Peace
Friday, September 21 is International Peace Day, sanctioned by the United Nations and supported in cities and countries around the world in a variety of different ways. This year, the group Be the Peace is partnering with a variety of peace groups to host "Med Mobs" (think of combining a flash mob with meditation!), abd The Peace Practice is hosting one right here in Lynchburg! All peace-minded residents of our fair city are invited to join in for a group meditation for peace. All are welcome! Bring a friend and join in this global movement!
At 12 noon, we'll join thousands of others across the globe for a 10-minute silent meditation for peace. Bring a blanket, cushion, or chair for sitting during the meditation (you might also want to bring a water bottle, sun screen, camera, etc.)
