The Nature-Lover's Itinerary
Morning

Before it gets too hot out, snag a DASANI Blue Bike or bring your own to the Blackwater Creek Trail System and hit the trails. The bikeway meanders through trees, over creeks, and along the byways of Lynchburg. Tucked away from the view of the traveling public, this trail system provides a natural sanctuary for both pedestrians and bikers. The trail is part of the Lynchburg Parks and Recreation trail and park system. If you're not much of a biker and prefer to walk, then do! The trails aren't just for bikes - they're for pedestrians too.

Be sure and bike to the Awareness Garden and admire its beauty while you're on the trail. The garden honors families, friends, and caregivers whose lives have been touched by cancer. To celebrate the end of treatments, to remember a loved one, or to bring hope for a cure, people can ring Lalla's Bell. Enjoy the garden and hope for a cure.

If you're feeling truly adventurous, you can also bike to Point of Honor, a high style Federal mansion once belonging to Dr. George Cabell. Point of Honor is located near the downtown exit of the Blackwater Creek Trails, and at the end of the Tunnel trail.

Noon

Tired and thirsty? Snag lunch at one of the fine restaurants Lynchburg has to offer and cool down while you're at it. Drive to Taylor Street and visit the Old City Cemetery for a bit of history and beautiful plant life. A Butterfly Garden and Lotus Pond add to the appeal. Stroll along at your own pace and relax after your bike ride. Enjoy the scenery and pet the local cats.

Afternoon

If it's a Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday, swing by the Nature Zone on Kemper Street! Touch a turtle...feed a toad...hold a snake... or just take in the wild sights of the The Nature Zone. Located in the ground level of the historic Kemper Street Train Station, this wildlife mini-museum is open free to the public. Call to be sure of their hours!

Additional Option

Game for a little indoor exercise? Try Rise Up Climbing on Church Street! Rise Up is an indoor climbing gym with climbing classes and plenty of rock walls to conquer.
